I think you need to go back to your original source at the DMV, I would imagine they would be able to give you the correct answers you need.
I don't understand why ATV's are not street legal. Bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles are allowed to use the rode so why not ATV's. Personally I like riding off rode but occasionally it would be nice to be able to share the rode with other vehicles.

One big problem is there is no rear differential. Quads are either shafts with a chain sprocket or shaft drive turning a spool. Either way there is no differentiation between the tires on the drive axle. Kinda like running a welded rear end in a car or pickup, illegal and dangerous.
Also would this require a motorcycle license? Think of the revenue the state could get from licensing quads(plates) and requiring an atv license(another test).

Now from what i understand, the title would be a "special vehicle title" so the issuing state would determine the type of license. i assume a motorcycle license would be used. as for the rear end, idk. when i talked to the trooper he gave me an out of date special vehicle requirements list. it had the usual like dual beam head lights, stop/brake light, two forms of braking, speedometer, horn, windscreen if neccessary, it also mentioned turn signals but the officer said i didnt need them if i use proper hand signals, and last it needs a mirror. then its has to be inspected in Springfield Il. by a couple of guys who approve these special vehicles. a lot of T's need to be crossed and I's dotted before that stage.

It sounds as if you had a favorable response from the officer you spoke with and that the modifications would not be that extensive. I would be interested in seeing where your research takes you. Please keep us posted.

In europe they have "street" versions of popular quads and they are street legal. Certain states in the US also alow quads to be plated and ridden down the street. If you have about $50,000 to blow on a quad you can buy a GG which is BMW powered street legal quad and can be ridden in ANY state. Here is a link to the Youtube video of it, if you fast foward to about 6min mark you will see them ride it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCnTad80tf0&feature=related

yeah i seen it a recent dirt wheels also had an article on it. we need to find a older 660r raptor. anyone want to donate one? the main idea that we are beatin up is wether to get hard surface dot approved atv tires, or to just put small car tires.

Poorkawi, I am not sure what your differential argument is? Quad tires are driven just about exactly the same as any motorcycle or moped so their streetability would be just as legal right? Add the better stability of 4 wheels and the bigger profile of a quad and I say quads are a better street machine than many motorcycles....especially the street-legal enduros. Maybe my bias is a bit lop-sided but I can't see a big difference between letting cycles on the road but not quads. I would guess it has more to do with the amount of people who push for cycle rights compared to those supporting quad rights. Maybe some day things will change......especially with gas prices getting crazy!

My 2 cents! I would love to be able to ride my quad to work every day! But the truth is I look at the people that are driving a 1600 to a 3500 pound car or 15000 lbs truck not to mention a 80'000 pound semi truck and trailer on the road today! Now add the young people that talk and text on there cell phone as they (TRY) to drive there vehicles down your local street and highways. I my self have had big bikes on the highway from the time I was 16 years old and have had several close call from people just not seeing me on a the road ways and this was on a 1100cc fully loaded goldwing motorcycle! That was before the age of cell phones, DVD players and GPS equipment in vehicles! So could the same people that could not see a big goldwing coming at them would or could they see a little sporty coming at them? I drive an 18 wheeler on a daily bases and to see how people drive in todays world I myself would not want to drive my off road vehicle on the roads today! Not that I would be against it, I would just be more realistic that in todays world its not that safe out there for a car let alone for a quad.

/\ I aggree with you Cadman as I am in the same boat as you!
Now motorcylcles can quickly move out of the way if they need to because of only have two wheels, now try to quickly go around something with a quad and watch that rear tire come up in the air, if not the front as well. I think that is the biggest reason why they are not street legal. It is a different ball game riding on hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt, etc.) than in dirt.
BTW
HARLEYS RULE AND HONDAS DROOL!!!!!!!!
