When you buy a quad do you buy used or new? Vote above for what you typically do and post your reasons why.

I like this thread as I am plannin on buying Sarah a quad before Summer and I don't know if I am buying used or new. I did however buy my first quad (Mojave) used, and I always buy used cars/trucks.

Good Topic!
OK I can't vote because I have did both! My first was a new Honda Rancher and I have not YET had any problem. I had made what I thought to be a very good deal from my local dealer and I was very happy about it . The second one was my wifes and it was bought new as well from the same dealer with the same results. A short time ago I bought a used 2002 Honda 400ex and it was show room new. Very little hours on her! Payed a lot less then new and so far it is looking like the better deal for the price. But this kind of deal only happens once in a blue moon! So I guess to sum it all up I would have to say I'm still on the fence!

I bought my Honda 250 new 2-1/2 years ago, it was my first quad and I didn't want to buy used and possibly get someone else's problem. I have had a few minor problems with it but no major issues to speak of. I new that buying new I would have a full factory warranty which is definitely a plus. I do, however, believe that if you are diligent you can still find a really good used deal. Things to consider when buying used are:
1. If you buy from a dealer you will probably get some sort of limited dealer warranty.
2. If you buy from a private party you will probably get a better price but no warranty.
3. When buying from private party pay close attention to the owners home. Is their home well maintained, is the grass trimmed, do their vehicles look nice, etc, if so then they probably take good care of everything they own including the quad you are interested in buying.
4. Do your research before you buy, an informed buyer will always walk away with a better deal.
5. Last but not least, never want something so bad that you cant walk away from the deal. Remember, they want to sell and you want to buy, it's just a matter of who wants it more.

I bought the Eiger used. This was my first quad so I wanted something that if I had to jump off, I wouldn't care so much what happened to it. I also do quite a bit of trail riding where's really no trail, so I didn't want to be concerned about every little scratch. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, so I wasn't afraid to have to fix something here or there - which I have. So far it has worked out pretty well.
Both my trail buggies I bought new, and from drop-shippers. Both situations worked out pretty well, considering they're both chinese pieces of tihs.
I'd be very leary of buying a used quad from a dealer. I've searched the website of a local dealer and holy crap do they mark them up. If you're patient, the right quad will come along from a private seller for the right price. If you're buying from a dealer, keep in mind s/he has to pay for that building, those technicians, and that inventory somehow.

buying someone elses problem just gives you more room to make it YOURS! it's way easyer to dismantel something afew years old than to go from the dealership to the garage and say "lets see!"
